The Social Security Agreement between USA and Denmark

The Social Security Agreement between USA and Denmark was signed in June 2007 and on February 28, 2008, the President submitted the agreement to Congress for approval. Congress has now approved the agreement and it took effect on October 1, 2008.

Further information on the agreement, as well as a brochure with information about the application procedure, will be published on the following website later this summer: www.socialsecurity.gov/international/whatsnew.html. The SSA International Office will also send out instructions to the country’s local SSA branch offices. 

An application for Danish Social Security must be submitted through the local Social Security Administration offices, which will forward it to the SSA Office of International Operations. From here it will be submitted to the Danish Social Security Administration (Sikringsstyrelsen). Once the application has been processed in Denmark, the Danish Administration will inform the SSA of its decision. The applicant will receive a copy of the decision at this point.

Important information for travelers to Denmark
People traveling on an American passport may enter Denmark and the other Schengen countries without a visa and stay as a tourist for up to three months. The passport must be valid 3 months beyond the last day of stay in the Schengen countries. Visa applications are processed by the Consulate General in New York at (212) 223-4545.
